Researching big cosmological questions, such as the meaning of dark matter and energy and the origin of the universe, takes huge amounts of computing power. Cosmology is one of the most demanding supercomputing applications and requires access to the most powerful supercomputers. This case study describes the energy efficiency improvements achieved from upgraded technology that were discovered during tests conducted at Durham University, by comparing the performance of AMD Genoa and Bergamo processors.
